With an Outstretched Hand to Oklahoma: Central Relief Efforts for Tornado Victims

June 5, 2013 | Repairing the World

Central Relief Efforts for Tornado Victims

This past Memorial Day Weekend, the Central Synagogue Oklahoma Tornado Relief coordinated a project to help the victims of the devastating tornados in Oklahoma.

Led by Miriam Herman and Doug O’Grady, both Long Beach natives working to rebuild their communities after Sandy, volunteers collected and delivered essential supplies to the Community House in Long Island, which Doug then sent to Oklahoma.

Central Synagogue’s efforts to help the tornado victims are far from exhausted. To determine the focus of future Oklahoma relief efforts, the relief fund coordinated with Temple B’nai Israel, a reform synagogue in Oklahoma City. Currently, the relief fund is in the process of sending donations to three vital projects: the Moore Public School Tornado Relief Fund to rebuild playgrounds devastated by the storm, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma Disaster Relief Fund which provides much needed food and supplies to victims of the storm, and Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity Tornado Relief which supports rebuilding in the Moore community.

We are very proud of the overwhelming generosity and support the Central Community showed during this project, the key to its success.
