Biographies of the nominees for the Board of Trustees.

Nomination for President:

Jon May

Jon May has spent his career analyzing, funding, and operating established and early-stage companies with a particular focus on restaurant and retail brands. Jon is currently Co-Founder and Managing Director of Floresta Ventures, LLC, which invests, owns, and operates businesses in the retail and restaurant space. Prior to Floresta, Jon was Executive Director of Natural Capital Partners Holdings LLC, and a founder and Managing Director of Catalytic Capital, LLC, a private equity firm focused on growing retail and consumer branded companies. Jon was also previously Senior Vice President of Corporate Development for Triarc Companies, Inc., and Chief Executive Officer of Arby’s, Inc. Jon currently serves on the boards of Columbia Care, Inc. and Indus Realty Trust, Inc., and is a former board member of Sneaker Villa and Marketwatch.com. Jon is Co-Chair of Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, where he has served as both President and interim Executive Director. He is also Co-Chair of Randall’s Island Park Alliance and a previous board member of the 92nd Street Y and the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. A native of New York City, Jon received a bachelor’s degree in government from Cornell University. Jon and his wife Juliana have two children, Jake and Phoebe. Jon is a lifelong member of Central Synagogue.

Nomination for Secretrary:

Josh Targoff

Josh Targoff is Partner, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of Third Point LLC, a New York-based investment manager. Prior to joining Third Point, Mr. Targoff worked at Jefferies & Company, Inc. from 2003 to 2008, where he served as General Counsel of Investment Banking. From 1996 to 2003, Mr. Targoff was an associate in the law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton, LLP. He received an AB from Brown University in 1991 and a JD from Yale Law School in 1996. Josh currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of DOROT, a New York-based nonprofit organization whose goal is to alleviate social isolation to older adults. Josh and his wife Kim have four children and live in New York.

Phil Berney

Phil Berney is Chairman, Member of the Management Committee and Investment Partner of Kelso & Company, a New York City-based, North American-focused middle market private equity firm. Prior to joining Kelso in 1999, Phil worked at Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc., eventually becoming a Senior Managing Director and Head of the High Yield Capital Markets group. He was previously in High Yield Finance at The First Boston Corporation. Phil received a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1986, where he was a Morehead-Cain Scholar. He is currently a Trustee and Member of the Executive Committee at The Trinity School of New York City, a member of the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Board and a past member of the Board of Trustees of The Mount Sinai Health System. He and his wife, Jane, joined Central Synagogue in 2012, and they have three adult children.

Jocelyn Markowitz

Jocelyn Markowitz began her career in investment banking at Kidder, Peabody and then in the Mergers and Acquisitions Group at UBS Securities. Over the years she has taken on multiple leadership roles in the Parents’ Associations at Chelsea Day School, All Souls School, Collegiate School, Hunter College Campus Schools, and as Reunion Fund Chair at Barnard College. She has served as Co-Chair of the Central In Action Leadership Team. She currently is on the Advisory Board of Communities for Healing & Justice.
Jocelyn received her BA in Economics from Barnard College. A lifelong New Yorker, she and her husband are the very proud parents of two children. They have been involved in numerous lay leadership roles and members of Central Synagogue since 2004.

Julie Rice
Julie Rice is an entrepreneur best known for co-founding the fitness phenomenon, SoulCycle. Julie’s life's work has been about building brand, community and customer experience. She served as Co-CEO at SoulCycle from 2005 to 2015 before serving as a Partner at WeWork from 2017 to 2019.

She is currently the Co-Founder of Peoplehood. Peoplehood is a guided group conversation practice designed to help people create new relational habits. Julie is a board member of WeightWatchers. She lives in NYC with her husband, Spencer, and their two daughters, Phoebe and Parker.

Jackie Weiss

Jackie Weiss is the founder of 12th Street Advisors, which helps companies develop and implement commercial strategies and prepare for capital-raises. She began her career as an equity research analyst at Merrill Lynch in New York, before spending time in sales, marketing and business development at companies including Michelin, Moleskine, and Google. At Beal Private Capital she worked with private fund managers and companies on capital formation. She has also served as a business advisor and outsourced CFO to private companies in the fields of professional services, e-commerce, media, and healthcare.

Jackie has a B.A. in History from Duke University, an M.A. in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. She lives in New York City with her husband Greg Raskin, and their college-aged children Daphne and Morris.
