Solitude to Solidarity: Ukrainians Finding Refuge at JCC Krakow

Every Friday Beginning July 21, 2023, 7:15–8:00 pm and Every Wednesday Beginning July 26, 2023, 12:30–2:00 pm

In Person (Pavilion)

During Passover 2022, photographer Chuck Fishman was invited by the JCC Krakow to document their work as they sought to assist the influx of refugees fleeing war in their native Ukraine. As he came face to face with hundreds of displaced Ukrainians, Fishman witnessed Polish Jews and the JCC Krakow mobilizing to help. What he captured was nothing short of tikkun olam, the repair of the world.

Fishman has made his career documenting the trials and celebrations of Polish Jewish life since 1975. From near annihilation to a reclamation of Polish Jewish identity, he continues to shed a light on this vibrant and active community. From portraits of survivors to images of people waiting in line for food and supplies to those of rediscovered Jewish identity, the works in this exhibition affirm the essential humanity of both the refugees and those who have welcomed them to Krakow with food, clothing, housing, education, childcare services, and more.
