Yom Kippur Afternoon Study Session

Location: David Geffen Hall

From: 2:30 pm - 3:30pm

Details: Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, will be teaching the text Study at David Geffen Hall on Yom Kippur Afternoon, titled “The God of Truth vs. the Culture of Lies.”

It’s hard to make sense of our lives when we are told that “truth isn’t truth.” Every day we are awash in lies – big lies and little lies – and sometimes we tell them ourselves. Adding to the confusion is the fact that according to Jewish tradition, some lies are not only forgivable but also obligatory. What lies do we tell ourselves? What lies do we tell others? Will the Holy One fact-check us on this day of reckoning?  How, if at all, will we be held accountable for the lies we tell? Using ancient and contemporary texts we will try to discern the truth of our lives from amidst our culture of lies.
