20s & 30s: The Next Stage: Jewish Theater by Millennial & Gen Z Playwrights

Tuesday, March 26, 2024, 6:30–8:30 pm

In Person (Pavilion)

Celebrate Women’s History Month and a new generation of Jewish storytellers with two one-act plays by contemporary Jewish female playwrights in their 20s and 30s. From three women in Utah grappling with Jewish sisterhood in Daughters of Miriam to a Passover commute disrupted by a talking subway train in G Train Exodus, these unique, funny, and poignant plays by Molly Levine and Jessica Fleitman offer fresh explorations into Jewish identity and tradition. Following the performance, enjoy dinner and engage in a casual talkback with the writers moderated by Rabbinic Intern Brooklyn Michalowicz.

About the Plays:

Daughters of Miriam by Molly Levine

High up in the Uinta Mountains just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, three young women celebrate their last hoorah with a camping trip. Cradled by the mountains and nature that raised them, they reckon with what their Jewish sisterhood means to them. Maybe it’s all a coincidence… Or maybe they are products of tradition.

G Train Exodus by Jessica Fleitman

Commuting is tough enough without a sentient talking subway train trying to derail your plans. While trying to leave New York City on the eve of Passover, a struggling young artist's journey takes a surreal turn when she encounters an unusual train requiring her help to embark on its own “exodus.”

About the Playwrights:

Molly Levine is a comedian, actress, writer, and multimedia performance artist. Molly grew up an outspoken, provocative Jewish girl in Salt Lake City, Utah amongst a culture that caused her to be fundamentally anti. Much of her work is informed by this as well as the radical act of “girls having fun.” Molly’s most recent production of Daughters of Miriam was at The Chain Theatre’s One Act Festival in February of 2022. Molly and her team took home the festival’s Audience Choice Award. Molly holds a BFA in Playwriting and Acting from Marymount Manhattan College, where she received the Playwriting department’s Golden Key at graduation. themollylevine.com

Jessica Fleitman is a writer of plays, musicals, and comedy. Her plays include Show of Hands (finalist: International Jewish Plays Project), The Flood (finalist: Seven Devils Playwrights Conference), and G Train Exodus (winner: LIC One Act Play Festival). Recognized with the Jerry Harrington Award for Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theater from the BMI Workshop, Fleitman is currently adapting her play The Average-Sized Mermaid into a musical comedy with composer Rick Bassett. She teaches playwriting at Princeton Adult School and holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she was honored with the Chair's Award for Distinguished Achievement. jessicafleitman.com
