When Ernest Brod was born, he seemed destined for a charmed life as the grandson of a Viennese movie mogul. But by the time he was one year old, his grandfather had been sent to Buchenwald, his father had been killed, his brother was on the Kindertransport, and his mother was planning their escape to America.
