Shabbat Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Posted January 18, 2013

Each year, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during Shabbat worship, a fearless civil rights leader who understood and reminded us that, “The segregationists and racists make no fine distinction between the Negro and the Jew.”

For our opening song, the congregation sang “Oh Freedom.”?

Cantor Buchdahl spoke briefly about her childhood experience attending an all-black magnet school and led the congregation in singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

In closing, Rabbi Rubinstein joined Cantor Buchdahl to sing “We Shall Overcome.” Dr. King famously marched with Jewish Civil Rights Activist Abraham Heschel.
