A Simple Act of Preparedness Saves a Life: Narcan Training in Action

November 12, 2024 | General News | Repairing the World

On November 21, 2024, Central Synagogue is offering a Narcan training session for the community. Led by Dr. Jon Avery, Director of Addiction Psychiatry at Weill Cornell, the session will teach life-saving skills that can make a difference in an overdose emergency—just like the one experienced by Central Synagogue staff member Eve Morin during a recent trip to Philadelphia.

While leading Central Synagogue teens through the city, Eve encountered an unconscious individual on the sidewalk. As the teens promptly called 911, Eve acted quickly. Thanks to Narcan training she received as part of Central Synagogue’s program made possible with the support of members Robin Kellner and John Sicher, Eve was prepared to respond. With her Narcan kit at hand, she administered the medication and was able to revive the individual, providing critical help in a moment of need until the emergency responders arrived.

Eve reflected, “Thanks to the training, I felt prepared to help the man we encountered. I just opened the package and squeezed it like a nose spray—it couldn’t have been easier. The teens and I had a meaningful conversation about what we experienced, and many are now eager to take the training themselves.”

This real-life experience reinforced that Narcan isn’t just for medical professionals—it’s a life-saving tool that can help anyone in the right place at the right time. And in a world where overdose deaths continue to rise, being prepared to save a life is something we can all do.
