David Wander - Jewish Tales

The story of the Jewish people unfolds over thousands of tales, from sources that range from Torah and Talmud to midrash, folktales, and parables. A mosaic of stories define our history and traditions, the pieces of which connect and combine in new ways in each generation.

In our generation, one of our great storytellers is David Wander. A New York-based artist, Wander is known for his striking visual interpretations of Jewish sacred texts and folktales. He seamlessly weaves a visual style equal parts Vincent van Gogh or James Ensor and Marvel or DC comics. But there is nothing juvenile about these images or this content. These are sophisticated and complicated stories, with lessons and morals that reveal their complexity only through repeated looking, study, and contemplation. These stories leap off the page, bursting with life, inviting us into their worlds.

David Wander is known for his striking visual interpretations of Jewish sacred texts and folktales. His work has been exhibited in museums and religious spaces across the U.S. and Israel, offering a fresh and modern perspective on the wide diversity of our people's narratives.

Viewing Hours:

The exhibition is located in the lower-level Pavilion of our Sanctuary building (652 Lexington Avenue; entrance on 55th Street via a ramp or stairs).

Public viewing hours for are Fridays from 7:15-8:00 pm (following Shabbat services) and Wednesdays from 12:30-2:00 pm. The exhibition will be open until February 12, 2025.

The exhibition will not be available for viewing on January 29.
