Jonine Bernstein is a tenured Attending Epidemiologist in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and Co-Leader of the MSK-wide Population Sciences Research Program. Before MSK, she was Deputy Director, Division of Epidemiology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. With funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Jonine’s research is in the area of genetic and molecular epidemiology, particularly the etiology of breast cancer and gliomas, and on developing/validating non-invasive biomarkers of breast cancer.

She has served as a regular member on multiple NCI and other peer review committees, here and abroad. Jonine is currently a member of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements Council and Advisory Board, the Radiation Effects Research Foundation Scientific Advisory Board in Hiroshima Japan, and the U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board on Radiation. Until 2018, she was also a member of the NCI Board of Scientific Counselors. Jonine is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology where she served as President from 2014–17 (elect, president, past).

Jonine holds a PhD in epidemiology from Yale University, an MS in applied biometry from the University of Southern California, and a bachelor’s degree from Brown University. She and her husband, Randy Mastro, and their daughter, Arianna, have been members of Central Synagogue since 2004.
