A Look at Our History: Confirmation 1992

Confirmation Class, May 1992

1992 was the first confirmation class over which Rabbi Peter Rubinstein presided. They are photographed in front of the open ark, a background often used for confirmation class photos. Rabbi Rubinstein is in the center next to Cantor Richard Botton. To the left is Associate Rabbi Tom Weiner and to the far right is Director of Education Jack Sparks. The size of the group is small compared to today’s classes which often reach 30 students. Read more

1919 Rugby Team

Central Synagogue’s Archives has some unusual photos. This one is of a championship rugby team of 1919.

Here is a fine team with their coach, their gear, and their big winners’ smiles. Or could they be a basketball team, using the laced ball of that time, suited for a game featuring passing than dribbling?

We do not know what F stands for. Do you? The following year’s uniforms are marked FM. Was it basketball or rugby? Whom and where did they play?

Archives looks forward to hearing from you at (212) 838-5122 x2041 or email Archives.
