Welcome to Central Synagogue. Central is transforming the way people experience Jewish life, cultivating ongoing exploration, and pursing a powerful vision for the role of Judaism in the world. We offer many portals for connection and invite you to join us in whichever way you feel most comfortable and inspired. Whether through “head, hand or heart” (learning, social justice, worship/music), we want to help enhance your personal experience with Reform Judaism.
Central Synagogue is one of the largest congregations in North America and the oldest synagogue in New York City in continuous use. With amazing courage and vision, the 140 families of Ahawath Chesed, founded in 1846 and located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, headed uptown in 1872 to build a synagogue large enough to seat 1,400 individuals. Today, Central is the spiritual home to more than 6,500 individuals who make up the vibrant tapestry of Jewish life at Central.
We hope you will explore the website so you can define and expand your role so that you can participate to the fullest extent possible in any and all of our activities.
Jewish culture is everywhere at Central Synagogue. No matter your age or level of knowledge you will find countless opportunities to connect with the community while expanding your Jewish learning.
Central aims to respond to emergency relief needs as well as longer term systemic challenges as we do our part to repair the world. In our pursuit of social justice, we seek to create closer bonds among members of our community because we know that the blessing is found both in helping others and in the relationships forged in the process.
Our worship services express the soul of our congregation. Each Shabbat our community gathers for dynamic and joyful worship services of prayer, song and Torah. Our majestic sanctuary is transformed into an intimate and warm setting for genuine connection between congregants and our experience of something transcendent, beyond ourselves.
Central encompasses a diverse community of all ages, ethnicities and walks of life, representing the rich mosaic of New York City, with a number of visitors each Shabbat as well.
We hope you will come to experience for yourself the joy of Shabbat and Holidays at Central Synagogue.
