Fourth grade students grapple with the question, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” (Pirke Avot). Students learn about themselves through the study of Torah and relating the stories of their ancestors to their own experience. They develop an appreciation for the ways in which Torah and its interpretation strengthen the greater Jewish community. Students begin the year with an intensive transition from Hebrew letter recognition to fluent decoding. They continue to develop their skills for meaningful participation in t’fillah through study of prayers in the classroom and participation in grade-wide services, including mini-Torah services.
