Israeli Film Series: “The Lover”

Thurs. April 8, 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Location: Pavilion

This series will explore contemporary Israeli culture through film (with English subtitles). Guided by Professor Miri Kubovy, participants will study the most important social and political issues in Israel today including: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Ashkenazi-Sephardi tension, poverty, attitude towards the army, the Holocaust, feminism, religious and secular population, the return to religion, the settlements, national and personal bereavement, foreign workers, “the other” ideology and its rejection, and Americanization in Israeli culture.

Film to be screened: The Lover

Based on by A.B. Yehoshua’s novel, this movie tells the story of a married couple and the man who comes between them.  Adam and Asia are married with a daughter.  Asia, working on her doctorate, accepts the help of Gavriel to assist with her research.  Before long, they become lovers. One day the lover disappears, and the husband decides to devote himself to finding his wife’s lost lover, as the Yom Kippur War breaks out. This film presents a challenge to all the narratives, and holy cows of Israeli society of that time.
