- The Jewish Braille Institute is always seeking volunteers to record materials for the blind.
JBI is proud to have the largest audio library in the world of books and magazines of Jewish and general interest. All JBI materials (in English and several other languages) are available to the blind free of charge.
Through the work of many volunteers, JBI records approximately 300 books a year, including foreign titles. The books range from best sellers like "The Devil Wears Prada" to the history of Western Europe.Volunteers narrate books and magazines and/or serve as directors during recording sessions. Directors and narrators work as a team to achieve the best possible recording. While the narrator reads, the director monitors the recording for clarity, pacing, and pronunciation, and corrects and edits mistakes.
To volunteer, all you need is a love of literature and an interest in making the printed word accessible to people who are blind, visually impaired, physically disabled or learning disabled. Recording sessions are two hours long. JBI asks that volunteers make a commitment for one 2-hour-long session a week. JBI's studio is open from 11am to 7:30 pm Monday through Thursday, and until 3pm on Fridays.
