Dear Central Synagogue NYC,
This is a very belated thank you for the wonderful Hannukah package that you sent me in December. I really love the pencil case that the children of the religious school made. There are only a few (maybe three or four) Jews on my base, and as far as I know, I’m the only practicing Jew. So I was thrilled to get the package, and I shared everything with the other Soldiers in my office. I’ve lived on Long Island nearly my whole life, and I know how busy NY life is, so I really appreciate your thoughts and the care you put into the package.
I’m a Lieutenant in the 173d Airborne Brigade Combat Team. We’re based out of Vicenza, Italy, which is about a 40 minute drive from Venice. Last year we received deployment orders to Afghanistan. I’ve been deployed since May 2007, and since we’re on a 15-month timeline, I won’t be getting home until August 2008. Luckily, we are all granted 18 days of R&R (rest and recuperation) leave, so I’ll have a chance to go to NY and be home with my family for Passover.
As for life in Afghanistan—I don’t go off of our base much, but when I do, seeing how people live here—especially women and children, make me so thankful to be American—and Jewish.
Thank you again for everything!
B’Shalom,
Ramona
