Dear Central Synagogue,
I am grateful that you thought of me by sending movies and popcorn. I am on the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, so it was wonderful to receive support from the Jewish community. Your kindness certainly brightened my time at sea.
My wife (Alison Buckholtz) and I volunteer as Jewish lay leaders for the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (Oak Harbor, Washington). With only a small local Jewish community at my base, we deeply appreciate efforts to support those of us who serve in the military. If you are interested in reading more about what it is like to be a Jewish family in the military, Alison has published a variety of articles that are online at http://www.alisonbuckholtz.com. She is also working on a book about our experience raising a military family that will be published in 2009.
I have attached a photo from the first night of Hanukkah this year. The Captain of the Truman is also Jewish and he invited Jewish service members to celebrate with him in his cabin. The other photo is of the aircraft I fly, the EA-6B Prowler.
Thank you again for your kind greeting and gift.
Sincerely,
CDR Scott Moran, USN
Executive Officer
Electronic Attack Squadron 130 (VAQ-130)
