Wed. April 7, 1:00pm – 2:00pm
Location: Room 503 - Community House

David Hoffman, Full Time Teacher

Delve into a multitude of Jewish texts to find and analyze the words of wisdom that have helped form the character of the Jewish people for thousands of years and still influence us today.  Together, we will look at excerpts from the Torah, the books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes, as well as Pirkei Avot (The Sayings of the Fathers), and other lesser known pieces of wisdom literature, hoping to find connections and relationships between what the sources of our religion have taught us in terms of how to live in our world.  Since we will be looking at Hebrew texts with various translations, comfort with the Hebrew language is not required but would have a positive impact on our conversations.

Israeli Film Series: “The Lover”

Israeli Film Series: “The Lover”

Adult Education Events

Thurs. April 8, 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Location: Pavilion

This series will explore contemporary Israeli culture through film (with English subtitles). Guided by Professor Miri Kubovy, participants will study the most important social and political issues in Israel today including: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Ashkenazi-Sephardi tension, poverty, attitude towards the army, the Holocaust, feminism, religious and secular population, the return to religion, the settlements, national and personal bereavement, foreign workers, “the other” ideology and its rejection, and Americanization in Israeli culture.
Film to be screened: The Lover
Based on by A.B. Yehoshua’s novel, this movie tells the story of a married couple and the man who comes between them.  Adam and Asia are married with a daughter.  Asia, working on her doctorate, accepts the help of Gavriel to assist with her research.  Before long, they become lovers. One day the lover disappears, and the husband decides to devote himself to finding his wife’s lost lover, as the Yom Kippur War breaks out. This film presents a challenge to all the narratives, and holy cows of Israeli society of that time.

Film to be screened:  Because of that War
This documentary is one of the few which arises out of the experience of children of Holocaust victims. The impetus for the film was the production of a 1988 music album, Ashes And Dust by two most popular Israeli rock stars, Yehuda Poliker and Yaakov Gill’ad. These two are children of Holocaust victims who become close because of their similar backgrounds, which they consider as their destiny, which determines many aspects of their lives. The film exposes the experiences of these two and their families, through separate and then combined interviews. Recording sessions and excerpts from the songs of this album, known to almost all Israelis, enliven this moving documentary.

Location: Community House - Room 603

Marion Lev Cohen, MSW and Rabbinical Intern
How can Jewish ethical values and virtues enrich and guide us, be it in our personal conduct, or in our relationships with others and with God? Our texts and tradition speak to us about how to live an ethical and meaningful existence. They embrace matters ranging from hachnasat orchim (welcoming of guests) to miyut sichah (minimizing small talk), as just two examples of values that can inform our everyday behavior.  We will encounter, explore, and struggle with these concepts as they emerge in biblical and rabbinic sources. We will discuss how these teachings inspire us to live more spiritual and fulfilling lives, and help us create families and communities built on respect and trust.

Film to be screened: Shiva- The Seven Days Of Mourning

It is 1991 in the midst of the first Gulf War and Israel is under daily missile attacks. But in the Ohayon family, tragedy has hit as beloved Maurice, one of nine brothers and sisters, has suddenly died. The family gathers for the traditional seven days of mourning (shiva) in which they are not allowed to leave the house. The intensity of this situation is a catalyst for more than just emotional support and communal grief. Jealousy, gossip, long term rivalry and financial problems come to the fore, as each of the siblings is faced with his frustrated ambitions.

Pathways to Jewish Knowledge

Pathways to Jewish Knowledge

Adult Education Events

Tues. April 27, 12:00pm - 1:30pm
Location: Community House - Room 503

Yonni Wattenmaker, Director of Lifelong Learning & Marion Lev Cohen, MSW and Rabbinical Intern

For many of us, our formal Jewish education ended with our Bar or Bat Mitzvah, leaving us with a child’s view of our religion and one of the world’s greatest civilizations.  As adults we approach Judaism asking how it can enrich our lives today, with a desire for Judaic competency and literacy. Pathways to Jewish Knowledge will address these twin goals of thought and practice. We will explore Jewish life cycle events, holidays, theological precepts and prayer, starting with the fundamentals and beyond. We aspire to create a community of learners committed to learning and respectful dialogue.  Please bring lunch with you.

For more information please contact Yonni Wattenmaker, Director of Lifelong Learning at 212-838-5122 Extension 4031.

Israeli Film Series: “No. 17”

Israeli Film Series: “No. 17”

Adult Education Events

Thur. April 29, 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Location: Community House: 9th Floor, Room 903

This series will explore contemporary Israeli culture through film (with English subtitles). Guided by Professor Miri Kubovy, participants will study the most important social and political issues in Israel today including: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Ashkenazi-Sephardi tension, poverty, attitude towards the army, the Holocaust, feminism, religious and secular population, the return to religion, the settlements, national and personal bereavement, foreign workers, “the other” ideology and its rejection, and Americanization in Israeli culture.
Film to be screened: No. 17
In June 2002, a bus on its way from Tel Aviv to Tiberias was attacked by a suicide bomber. 17 people were killed, 16 were identified. No. 17 wasn’t. The film documents in real time over a period of six months the search for the identity of a man no one claimed missing.  Parallel to the story of the search for one victim’s identity the film pursues numerous people’s stories. Together these stories create a portrait of a society living under the shadow of death.  When it seems that the investigation has reached a dead end a vague lead suddenly appears.
