Jethro Shabbat with New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman

Jethro Shabbat with New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman

Worship Events

Friday, February 5, 6:00pm
Location: Main Sanctuary

The Torah portion Yitro (Exodus 18:1-20:23) is named for Moses’ father-in-law Jethro (Yitro). After observing Moses, the leader of the Israelites, act as judge to settle every dispute that arose, Jethro suggests to Moses that others resolve the less difficult disputes.

On the Shabbat when we read this portion, Central Synagogue honors the legal profession in a special service called Jethro Shabbat. This year’s guest speaker is New York State’s new Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman.

Judge Lippman will speak immediately following a somewhat shortened Shabbat service and conclude before 8:00pm. His talk is titled, “Justice, Justice Shall You Pursue: The Chief Judge’s Perspective on Justice and Jewish Values.”

All members of Central Synagogue and the community, whether involved in the legal profession or not, are welcome to attend this free event.

Exodus 18:17-27:
But Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing you are doing is not right; you will surely wear yourself out, and these people as well. For the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone. Now listen to me. I will give you counsel, and God be with you! You represent the people before God: you bring the disputes before God, and enjoin upon them the laws and the teachings, and make known to them the way they are to go and the practices they are to follow.

You shall also seek out from among all the people capable men who fear God, trustworthy men who spurn ill-gotten gain. Set these over them as chiefs of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, and let them judge the people at all times. Have them bring every major dispute to you, but let them decide every minor dispute themselves. Make it easier for yourself by letting them share the burden with you. If you do this — and God so commands you — you will be able to bear up; and all these people too will go home unwearied.”

Moses heeded his father-in-law and did just as he had said. Moses chose capable men out of all Israel, and appointed them heads over the people — chiefs of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens; and they judged the people at all times: the difficult matters they would bring to Moses, and all the minor matters they would decide themselves. Then Moses bade his father-in-law farewell, and he went his way to his own land. Click here to read the full portion.

Secrets from Marketing Stars: How to Get Work, Keep Work and Reinvent Yourself When Necessary

Secrets from Marketing Stars: How to Get Work, Keep Work and Reinvent Yourself When Necessary

Community Events

Thursday, February 11, 6:30-8:30pm
Location: Rooms 902 & 903

No one’s career moves straight up. While there are lots of people who look as if they have continually improved their job responsibilities, titles and compensation, you can be sure they’ve had at the least, a hiccup along the way.  The challenge is not how one reacts and behaves during the good times, but more importantly how one behaves and moves forward in the more challenging times. Central members Valerie Salembier and Paul Block, husband and wife, will talk about skills for successful career management, the profound disappointments and wounds that come up along the way, the realities of reinvention, the importance of building and nurturing relationships at all levels, resilience, and most of all, lessons learned. They will answer questions, too.

Valerie Salembier is Senior Vice-President and Publisher of Hearst Corporation’s Harper’s Bazaar.  Previously, she had been Vice President and Publisher of Hearst’s Esquire Magazine.  Prior to joining Hearst in 1996, Ms. Salembier had been Senior Vice President of the New York Times, President of the New York Post, Publisher of TV Guide Magazine and Senior Vice-President at USA Today.

Paul J. Block is an Operating Partner at Behrman Capital and Chairman and CEO of Proteus Capital Associates, LLC, an investment-banking firm focused on investment opportunities in China. Previously, he
was the Chairman and President of the international division of a leading consumer products company. He has also advised several of the world’s largest retailers, financial institutions, insurance companies, private equity groups, and consumer products manufacturers on a series of projects ranging from global strategic development to their expansion into the Chinese market.

Tuesday February 23, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Location: Community House - Room 503

Yonni Wattenmaker, Director of Lifelong Learning and Marion Lev Cohen, MSW and Rabbinical Intern

For many of us, our formal Jewish education ended with our Bar or Bat Mitzvah, leaving us with a child’s view of our religion and one of the world’s greatest civilizations.  As adults we approach Judaism asking how it can enrich our lives today, with a desire for Judaic competency and literacy. Pathways to Jewish Knowledge will address these twin goals of thought and practice. We will explore Jewish life cycle events, holidays, theological precepts and prayer, starting with the fundamentals and beyond. We aspire to create a community of learners committed to learning and respectful dialogue.  Please bring lunch with you.
