Central Synagogue proudly presents our first international film and food series. The movies will highlight Jewish life from several unique parts of the world. The screenings will be accompanied by special guests and delectible treats showcasing the culinary traditions of those countries.

Film Series: Son of Saul

Join us for a screening of Son of Saul (Hungary, 2015) with a special post-film discussion with Saul himself, the Oscar winning actor, Géza Röhrig, moderated by Rukhl Schaechter, Editor of the Yiddish Forward.

About the Movie: In this searing, Oscar-winning drama, a concentration camp inmate tasked with burning the dead discovers the body of a young boy who he takes for his son. He is faced with the harrowing decision of either participating in the clandestine uprising being planned among the prisoners, or securing a proper Jewish burial for the child.

About the Movie: Yared Zeleke’s remarkable Oscar-nominated debut tells the story of young Ephraim, a half-Jewish, Ethiopian boy who is sent by his father to live among distant relatives after his mother’s death. Ephraim is quickly able to win over his cousins, but when his uncle decides that his beloved sheep must be sacrificed for the next religious feast, he will do anything to save the animal and return home.

About the Movie: This touching story centers around a group of families who, seeking a better life, emigrate from India to Israel in the late 1960s. It explores the hardships and surprises that come with the integration of multiple families from different ethnic backgrounds and their struggles with immigration and prejudice.
