Nursery School at Central Synagogue
May Family Nursery School
At the May Family Nursery School, we see each child as a unique individual. Our program is designed to maximize the development of the whole child - intellectually, socially, physically and emotionally. The children encounter many learning opportunities and challenges in a stimulating and happy Jewish environment. We believe that the learning process is fundamentally a cooperative effort involving teachers, parents and students. A visit to our school will reveal that this spirit of cooperation and respect is successfully achieved through the mutual efforts of teachers and students. Parental support and involvement are significant factors in creating this dynamic educational experience.
Nursery School Program
Our activities emphasize intellectual development through exploration and experimentation, development of fine and gross motor skills through classroom and outdoor play, and development of social skills. We strongly value and foster the natural curiosity and motivation of each youngster. By providing challenging activities within an atmosphere of acceptance and warmth, we strengthen each child's sense of accomplishment and self esteem.
Pre-reading, language arts, math and science experiences are offered through concrete, logical, sensory experiences. Periodic trips for the older groups expand their understanding of "here and now," the work adults do in their community, the city in which they live, its transportation systems, construction work, rivers and parks, museums and nearby country environments. Once a week, a music and movement specialist works with each of our groups. In addition, a "Book Looks" library program has been introduced. Classes visit the Synagogue library and share a reading time with the emphasis on fun and enjoyment.
Parent Participation
Parents are encouraged to feel at home in our school. Their talents enrich our school through creative art, story telling, working in the library, helping with holiday celebrations, joining in trips to apple orchards, zoos, museums, concerts and supporting tzedakah projects throughout the year. Our annual Scholarship and Enrichment Fundraiser is coordinated entirely by our families. Parents have the opportunity to support a Parents' Association and to contribute to the school newsletter, "Beyond the Backpack". In addition, once a week, we have a consultant from the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services who works closely with our teachers and families.
Working with Your Child
Rapid growth and development characterize the child's early school years. During this period, children master the skills that will allow them to realize their many talents, potentials and interests. At the Central Synagogue May Family Nursery School, we appreciate the lasting impact of an early positive educational experience on the life of a child, and we aim to provide this kind of enriching experience for all of our students. In an effort to establish positive beginnings, our teachers make home visits to the children shortly before the start of school. We are sensitive to the need for gradual separation between young children and their parents during the early weeks of school.
Many of our children go on to independent schools. Working as a team with our parents, we help develop guidelines for selecting a school that is an appropriate match for each child. The children take the required Education Records Bureau test in the familiar setting of their school. Early in the fall, we hold a parent meeting to discuss admissions procedures for public as well as private schools.
Staffing
Our teachers are experienced, mature, highly trained early childhood educators. All of our head teachers, as well as several associate teachers, have master's degrees. The entire staff participates in ongoing workshops and conferences, insuring the school's professional commitment to teaching.
Age Groups
The youngest children who come to our Nursery School three times a week must be between the ages of 2.7 - 3.0 years of age by October 1st.
